Las Mascaras > Chthonic

Chthonic means, "concerning, belonging to, or inhabiting the underworld." I happened upon this word from a description of my work by an artist friend of mine. Often hearing the word Chthulu-esque to describe the tentacle forms I make, "Chth" being the root word. Coming from khthon, "in, under or beneath Earth". I have accepted this word as resonant with my work, however instead of being Chthonic deities of the Earth, they are Chthonic excavations of the mind. This mask was build in Valencia Spain in 2015 in a bathtub.

After awhile I felt compelled to build the psychic bodies of my shifting personality, identify, name, form, and distinguish them externally in better hope of understanding my dissociated aspects of self. I have come to know my intuitive artistic process as shadow work.

My work, "Chthonic", is about trauma residuals and energetic imprinting left behind in the psyche of beings from domestic violence and sexual assault. These characters (the masks) are the emerging thought-form amalgamations from traumatic debris. Trauma resurfaces in snapshots, flashes of visions, sensations, sounds, feelings that victims try to piece together or to forget. When growing up in environments with addiction, physical violence, or sexual abuse, there is a constant process of building and re-building psychic identities after the unpredictable storms in the life of the survivor. This work is about divisions of personality, fragmentation, confiding in symbolic voice through art, and surviving, against all odds. From which came the gift of synesthesia between psychic energy and texture, color, touch, and form. I have decided to communicate this work for other survivors.
